Podcasting
Who
would have known 20 years ago that the internet would have revolutionized our
lives in such an incredible way. The word “podcasting” first appeared in
February 2004 from a combination of
“broadcasting” and “iPod.” It is a digital audio file that can be
uploaded to a blog or website and listened to instantly. Gone are the days of
recording on a cassette tape hoping that the tape doesn’t break or go bad.
Podcasting can touch areas such as education and entertainment. No longer does
a person need to wait to be heard. I will share the many ways in which podcasts
can be used.
Sharing
information and ideas has become easy with the advent of the internet. Gone are
the days of waiting to be discovered. People now have the opportunity to be the
producer and host of their own “radio show.” People can now find what they want
to hear about and are no longer limited by what is on traditional radio. How
incredible is this? Digital recording
has made this all possible in a short amount of time.
The
uses for podcasting in education and libraries are still evolving. However, three
uses worth noting are: Booktalks, Tours
and Classroom podcasts. Booktalk covers
titles students are interested in reading and want to know more about. The
librarian gives a quick overview of the book, which will let a student know if
it is appropriate for their reading level and interest. Library tours can be given called
“Soundseeing” . These tours describe the layout of the library and how best to
use the resources available. The tour can be narrated by the librarian and
student perspectives. The podcast can be enhanced with images to support the
audio.
Podcast
use in the classroom can increase achievement. The students can create a
podcast based on topics just learned. This requires creativity and promotes
higher level thinking. It also increases confidence in the classroom and the
students become more engaged in their learning. The only drawback is the time
and commitment needed to make the podcast.
Many
in entertainment are using podcasts to get “discovered.” One can create a website and upload many
different feeds to it for download at anytime by listeners. This has also changed the entertainment
industry because now the field is more level and not just for those who know
the “right people. “ People are even adding video (vodcast) to
their podcasts for a more visual effect.
Truly,
the sky is the limit when it comes to podcasting. It can be done on any topic
and posted to a website for anyone to review at anytime. I am excited about
what the future holds for this new technology and its uses. The internet is
really a wonder.
